2011 was the best year yet at Bonneville- not a lot of cars racing, not a lot of spectators scrambling for photo ops and the weather was in the 90's. And after a few long years we finally got a record with the '53 Mainline. Actually 2 records!!! The first day out Chad Ausburn drove in the XF/BFALT (flathead/blown/fuel/altered) class and went 121mph on a 114mph record, while the next day Jake Doomey changed classes (XF/BGALT) and crushed the 115mph record with a 126mph!!! The first flathead records for the Bean Bandits since 1988. Stoked......

The last time I posted was when my dog Roxxi died. Though she's gone she will never be forgotten- but I'm a dog guy and I can't live without them. I picked up an Entlebucher last Saturday and Cooper named her Bella. I found out there's a girl in Cooper's first grade class named Bella and he said she's the prettiest girl in class- so that explains it.

In the last two months I got a chance to shoot the Dude, Jeff Bridges (my producer wouldn't let me put a photo up cause we don't have a release yet), I went out to Jeremy McGrath's ranch and shot some motocross which was pretty impressive (I had no idea how fast those guys go through trails and berms), and... well, I guess that's about it. Can't remember.

Last Friday I had to put my dog Roxxi to sleep. She had cancer in the liver.

We found out Friday mourning and she was put down that night- she was in pain,

hadn't eaten in days, throwing up. My son Cooper screamed and cried- he didn't

understand why we couldn't fix her. One of the hardest things I've done in my

life was to hold Roxxi's face as they put the injection in- I saw the life go from

her eyes. I cried then and I'm crying now. Long live mans best friend.

Last night I met up with longtime-ago Slap art director and pal Hassan, who was shooting a music video for the band Scream. If you haven't heard of them do your homework and get back to me. One of, if not THE greatest hardcore band from D.C. (I don't even count The Bad Brains or Minor Threat- that's a whole 'nother level). Peter and Franz Stahl, Skeeter Thompson and Kent Stax- all original members. Scream was the first to have a full album on Dischord- "Still Screaming". They're back together and making a new album. They played all the OG songs last night and it gave me the shivers- I spent my teenage years running around D.C. watching Scream play whenever I could.

The Vagabond pool in Fresno was one of those places where you could hideout, skate, lurk and feel like no one else in the world knew what you knew. It was an abandoned motel that had an empty pool and you could have it to yourself most of the time. The locals were cool. Me and Dan Drehobl would drive from SF two hours each way just to skate it. On one occasion we thought it would be fun to drive down and paint it- the whole thing. I was thinking pink (Pink Motel) but we decided on orange.

Dan a week before we got artsy.

We called some friends and told them to come by and skate the next day. That night we went to Home Depot and bought 2 gallons of orange, thinking that would be enough. We had no idea what we were doing. We started painting at midnight, under a full moon. There were a few creeps rumbling around the motel, looking for an open door and a place to crash. They ignored us completely while we rolled on the paint with broom handles.

AP, completely under-appreciated in the world of skating, is one of my all time favorites.

We could barely sleep that night. We wanted the sun to come up so bad- we were just itching to skate. It was like going to bed on Christmas eve. When we got there we pulled the tape off the tiles and it was on. Alan Peterson, Richard Paez, Karma Tsocheff and Max Schaaf showed up and we had a blast. The 2 gallons (maybe it was 3) of paint didn't last that long so after our day of skating we went back to Home Depot, bought more paint and finished the job. The Vagabond deserved it.

with Anderson. It's really inspiring watching people that

While back in DC last weekend I had the pleasure of hanging out with Robert Duvall on his farm in Virginia. His stories of being in New York in the 50's and 60's, hanging with his no-named friends Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman, chasing girls and trying to survive. He said he would rent a horse in the Bronx to learn how to ride so he could be in westerns.

This might be the most important Indy ad of all- maybe the most important ad in skateboarding history. Thrasher Magazine, February 1983. Photo by C.R. Stecyk III. The way it was told to me was this: Grant Brittain shot for Thrasher at the time from so cal., this ad hit the streets, Grant didn't think this ad or the attitude of Thrasher was representing skateboarding, he quit and started Transworld under Larry Balma's wing (the guy who owned Tracker, Indy's biggest competition, archenemies, so cal vs. nor cal- you get the picture). The fact that someone could get bummed from this ad just vindicated everything that Indy and Thrasher stood for.

Lee Bender's Indy ad made me think about how much fun I had shooting and laying out ads for Indy. I did this Jim Greco ad in late 2005. Fausto had Kevin Ancell make these Indy sledge hammers and gave one to me. Well, at the time the HAMMER and Greco were synonymous- so, this was obvious. Thrasher, 2006.

Braydon Szafranski, fridged kick over a funbox in Melbourne Australia. 2008. Indy ads have always been about the skater and skating, or what the image of Indy is/was about- which set it apart from all the other truck ads that were just product shots and jingles. I guess times have changed though.

I made this ad for Dice Magazine, a small mag about motorcycles. They started making an insert in the middle of the mag about skating. Black, red, white- Indy colors, HA colors. I've always been a sucker for checker boards.

Lee Bender woke up one mourning and couldn't move- literally. They took him to the hospital and he was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). He lost a lot of his equilibrium, got really sick, started treatment that will last the rest of his life and he wasn't able to skate anymore. He was sessioning one day then he was done the next. I don't mean for this to sound so cryptic but it's how it went down. Lee soon moved from Phoenix to Indianapolis to be closer to friends and family and to start treatment in Chicago. So far there's no cure, but Lee has found an experimental treatment in Europe that has a 80% success rate. And of course it's illegal in the US, probably cause they haven't figured out how to make millions on it. Well Lee, with the help of Cow Town skates in AZ., Real Skateboards, Lance Mountain and friends and family are trying to raise money to get him to Europe. The whole things going to cost him around $12,000. If you've never donated money to anything then here's your chance. $5? $10? Or more if you can. Revenge Run, North Carolina

Just got back from a weekend on the road with Ralph Miller and his Revenge Run crew. People came from as far as New York, Ohio and Florida just to get a glimpse of Carolina's Outer Banks and Black Beard's final resting grounds. It was a great time and can't wait to do it again next year.

Rene Matthyssen, Waikiki, HI. January 1994. The reason I remember the date is because that night Rene's dad woke me up at 4 in the mourning to tell me LA was on fire. The Northridge earthquake had just happened and all hell was breaking loose. This is obviously a National Geographic rip off cover and I wish I had gotten lower to silhouette his board. I actually won a magazine design award for this cover. I didn't enter anything, but I got a plaque in the mail saying I won. I put it in my desk and never saw it again- I have no idea who it was from, where it went or what it was called. This was also my first time to Hawaii and I got knocked out by a security guard at The University of Hawaii for taking his picture. All I remember is that his arms were the size of my legs. I had a cut from my ear to my mouth from the ring on his hand.

There's no real story behind this cover other than it doesn't say Slap on it. The honchos upstairs thought I was retarded for not putting the name of the mag on the front. I asked Barry McGee (Twist) to do a cover for me and told him to do whatever he wanted. One of my favorites. 1993.

Alan Petersen, Pizzy Skatepark, Gold Coast Australia- 1996. For me, this is one of those photos that became timeless. I'm not trying to float my own boat here, but every photographer has his or her own personal favorites. Technically this photo is nothing special- Kodak c-41, developed normal, no strobes, no Photoshop, shot down the line- Alan was in prime form that day. We took the train from Andrew McKenzie's house, I think Dustin Dollin was there (Dustin was 14-15 and a hyper-psycho little kid), and it was 110 degrees. My first time to Pizzy- old, rough, bumpy, no coping and it looked like it hadn't been skated in years (though Seb Steele and Clint Bond were probably lurking in the bushes). There's stories of the Bones Brigade going 7'+ and pulling McTwists in the mid '80's- gnarly. This photo is one of only a hand full that I've shot, over the last 20 years, that I actually like.

Rune Glifburg, no-comply on a mini ramp in middle America, 1998. This was taken on a Volcom trip to Skatopia- my first time there also. Remy Stratton, Dollin, Bam, Rune, Jaya Bonderov and the band The Line. We had a 2 man slingshot shooting burning lumps of coal into Lake Minnetonka from the roof of some dudes cabin in Minnesota. I almost got arrested in Texas cause the cops thought I was a gang banger (I had a Sharpie in my pocket and they wanted to know what gang signs I wrote), thought I was supplying alcohol and pornography to minors (porn mags and beer in the van while Dustin and Bam were under age) and procession of illegal firearms (everyone was shooting bottle rockets out the window). The one time of the whole trip that I drove the van- Remy was to drunk to drive. I tried to throw a chair out the 21 story window at a hotel in Chicago- it bounced of the shatter proof glass and hit me in the face. The door to our hotel was broken down by fireman in Flint, Michigan cause of hotel was on fire. And Dollin tripped balls on liquid acid at Skatopia. This was all in one trip. After this cover came out Rune told me that if he knew that all he had to do was a no-comply to get the cover, he would have done it a long time ago. In an off hand way he was saying that it wasn't up to par for a cover. My philosophy about covers was it had to be cool, different, something you wouldn't see on the front of any other mag- something unique. Covers don't have to be the biggest, the gnarliest, the hottest spot or guy- they have to make you want to pick up the mag and skate. There's also a shit load of hidden text in this cover- grayed out 3pt. Helvetica. Thanks Max Miedinger!

Ahh, the Hosoi cover. It was a big deal to put Holmes on the cover in '96. Street skating was everything, vert was contained strictly to contests (much like today- except the Rumble), and Christian, I hate to say it, was way past his prime. When it came to transitions these were the days of Tas & Ben Pappas, Neal Hendrix, Danny Way, Max Schaaf and Mike Frazier. But no matter which way you slice it, nothing beats a Hosoi method air. We got tons of flack for putting a vert photo on the cover. The cover was supposed to be silver and black with the orange Slap, but we couldn't get it done in time. Me and Gabe Morford were sitting on the bottom bleacher, near the flat bottom, taking turns using my camera, shooting every other frame. This photo is Gabe's, while the next frame I shot an almost identical method air. Gabe, Huf, Phelps, Phil Shoa, Karma and myself drove from SF to Las Vegas for this vert contest. I got citizen arrested my the ex-Sheriffs brother, in the town of Mojave, for skating the ex-Sheriffs motel pool. The brother owned the gas station, across the street from the motel, where we were getting gas. We saw the empty pool and jumped in. The brother came from the gas station, screaming at me, pushed me and grabbed my board. I panicked, thinking I wouldn't have a board to skate, so I socked him. I grabbed the board, ran to the van and we took off. Huf and Karma, who were also in the pool, ran- but not to the van. As we took off we realized the two weren't with us so we circled through this little town looking for them. The cops caught up with us and now the guy I punched and his brother, the ex-Sheriff, were with them. The guy citizen arrested me in front of the cops (cops were cool, they just wanted us to get out of town) for trespassing, vandalism and assault. A few weeks later Fausto told me that he knew the guy I punched, he had sold him a go-kart for racing (Fausto owned Track Magic- a go-Kart company) and that he had taken care of everything. All I had to do was pay him $1000 for his hospital bill- two broken fingers from when he fell from being punched. This makes me sound really tough!!

Nowadays, skateboard magazines are 99% compliant with what the advertisers, sponsors and companies want. In the 90's, skaters and photographers dictated what went in the magazines, not the company that bought the most pages. We had a lot more freedom to do what we wanted, with who and where we wanted. Trips were formed around groups of friends, not video premiers, filming trips and shop signings. This cover of Fred Gall was shot in Albuquerque N.M.. Me and Huf wanted to go on a skate trip and bring along our friends, whether they rode for Real or not. Gio Estavez, Peter Bici, Robbie Gangemi, Tim McKenny, Captain Lou (or Lou Metal as he's now known), Johnny Fonseca, Freddy, Huf and myself. We skated, drank, chased strippers, laughed and skated some more. I hope that magazines still want to hit the road with their buddies to have fun and explore- regardless of who flips the bill. It seems that Joe Brook and Jake Phelps are the last holders of the flame.

People told me that these covers were to clean and boring, but that was exactly our intentions.

Clean and "simple" was a hugh change of pace for us. These two covers were also the ones that

had Mike Carroll mad at me. Chico had just gotten on DVS, but in this photo he's wearing DC's. No big

deal, right? In those days everyone was riding different company boards, or blanks, or different

shoes and clothes from companies they didn't ride for. And for me, I'm just shooting the photo. Who

you ride for or what you were wearing didn't mean shit to me. As soon as this issue came out Mike,

(for those that don't know Mike is co-owner of Girl/Chocolate skateboards and Chico rides for

Chocolate), called me saying how fucked I was, and I shouldn't have put Chico on the cover, and if

DVS was pissed it was my fault, etc... And I always thought it was a good thing to be on the cover of a mag.

To make a long story short, a few months later this cover of Guy Mariano came out and I got the

same phone call from Mike. Now it's a conspiracy, right?! Guy rode for Axion but is wearing

something else on the cover- can't remember what. To me, it was a treat to shoot something

of Guy and rare to have him on the cover. After it was all said-and-done everyone liked the

covers and no one got kicked off their shoe sponsors. It took Mike a solid year to stop being mad

at me. It's funny to look back on those times- we were all growing up and figuring out who we

were and how the world worked. Me and Mike can laugh about those times nowadays and only

remember the good stuff.

Wow, I don't know what to say about this cover. If you know me you've probably heard me say "being different for the sake of being different is weak". This cover taught me that. Doing something different as a means to an end or truly as an experiment is great, but for the most part it becomes a gimmick and gets old really quick. And sometimes, after you've tried something different, you should know when to push delete.

Jamie Riley was the art director at Slap in '93, even though I still did the covers, and was playing around with concrete poetry.

Concrete poetry is defined as: poetry in which the meaning or effect is conveyed partly or wholly by visual means, using patterns of words or letters and other typographical devices.

The great thing about Slap, at least for us who worked there, was there were no rules or guidelines. We could do whatever we wanted, experiment as much as possible, fail miserably and keep going. Concrete poetry?- lets do it! You also have to remember that this was '93 and we did this all in Photoshop (probably 1.0) and we had no idea what we were doing. Anyway, somehow I got this picture of Wade Spayer at his senior prom and thought it would be perfect on the cover (I told you I had no idea what I was doing). After spending a few hours playing with fonts and colors and butchering a cut-and-paste job with the photo, the cover was complete. It looked great on a 10" computer screen, but a few weeks later when we got printed copies... Well, you live and learn.

I've been looking through old issues of Slap and realized there were stories behind everything me

and the boys did at the mag. Take this cover for example- I think this was a Real board I'd been

riding and it was time to change it up. I always liked the pattern of decay left by the truck so I

thought it would make a cool photo. Late one night while on deadline, with no cover photos

to choose from, I decided this would look good on the front of the book. "Only a skater will know

what this is", at least that's what I thought at the time. The next day Fausto came down to the

office and saw the cover, "What the fuck is that?! You can't use that- it makes no sense!" he said.

After a couple of hours of me convincing him that that was going to be the cover and I wasn't going

to change it, he finally gave up and told me I'd see that it would never sell. A few weeks after

this issue hit the news stand Fausto walked into the office and exclaimed, "Tony, (Fausto's son,

who was probably 13 at the time), saw the cover and knew what it was right away. Genius!"

He figured that if Tony got it then all skaters got it. From that point on he never second guessed our covers.

I really do miss Fausto.

Could you please tell me who is on the cover of Slap June 93. I didn't see any mention in the contents. Backside ollie on vert. Man that's a killer pic of Mic-e Reyes doing that frontside bluntslide in the more East Coast article. Would you happen to have that pic in color? What was Mic-e pulling that day?? Not to many photos/footy of him skating in the 90's.

Colin McKay, Bricktown, CT. Missing the black plate- notice there's no real black in that photo. Printer fuck-up. Same contest that Cardiel pulled the padless melon 540. Drove back to NYC that night with Mic-e, Kareem Campbell, Greg Carroll, Jeff Pang, Cardiel and Julian to hang out with Larry Clark. He lived next door to the Ghost Busters garage from the movie. We all went to a rave that night with Chloe Sevigny and Harmony Korine. Cardiel and Pang were breakdancing till the sun came up and the club scene in Kids was based on that night. The next day was the first Back to the Banks contest at the Brooklyn Banks. Mic-e was still a cop at that time but came on the trip with Cards and Julian. We shot the front blunt- maybe his last skate photo. The street fight scene in Kids was also based on this day. Some thug kid stole a skaters board, the skater tried to grab it back, the thug hit him in the head with a skate key, and the entire contest chased the guy down the street and destroyed him. Mic-e broke it up and the thug was bleeding all over the place. Good times.

My friend Johnny Schillereff told me that his mom saved everything "skating"

from when he grew up in Virginia Beach. He told me years ago that she had a

newspaper clipping with a picture of me in it. I finally came across it on the web.

My mom lived in VB in the early 80's and I'd go visit her in the summers. I'd cut

through a few backyards and I'd be at Trashmore. When other kids were in school

I'd skate the ramp and have it all to myself. Pink Raeategui, pink Rat Bones and black Motobuilts.

The only time I didn't ride Indy's.

I went to Austin, TX. last week to shoot the South x Southwest music festival for the Associated Press. William Philpott, Tobin Yelland, Jonathan Mehring, Anthony Bolante and myself ran around like crazy trying to shoot as a many bands as possible. Over 80 venues, over 2000 bands and 5 days stomping around downtown Austin. My feet were swollen after the first day. I got to see a ton of good bands and lots that I didn't think I'd like but were really good. Scorpion Child, Sleepy Sun, Naam and Bison BC are now on my radar.

I've never been a big Bone, Thugs and Harmony fan but it was one of the best hip hop shows I'd ever seen. They played unannounced at The Levi's Fader Fort, and the crowd went wild.

Crank County Daredevils. These are my friends I stayed with for the first couple of nights. Straight out of Ashville, NC. and on Ralph Miller's Rusty Knuckles label. These guys put on a show that's hard to beat- on stage and off.
